Hello! Welcome!

Hello! Welcome! is a musical group that is constellated around the magic of collective improvisation. Although each member is an accomplished instrumentalist in their own right, together the band often plays simply, finding focus in hypnotic grooves and slowly shifting harmonic patterns Held presence, time and space give way to the occasional, colourful, virtuosic flourish, or explosive passage, breaking through into a raw and primal energy, seated in steadfast rhythms.
The band consists of a shifting line up centred around the tabla/drum kit (Jesse Barrett), double bass/electric bass (Owen Morgan), saxophone/flute (Peter Beardsworth), and trumpet/flugelhorn (Mitch Probert-Watt). They make discretionary use of electronics to create drones and patterns, and manipulate the sounds of their instruments.
The band is led by percussionist Jesse Barratt. Jesse's affiliation with the principles and philosophies of rhythmn within Hindustani music finds expression in numerous ways in the band, with the philosophy of clarity of sound, freedom to express oneself and speak the truth at any given moment. The instruments the ensemble is made up of naturally create an amphasis on melody. Instead of dense chordal harmony, the band expores the harmony that occurs when setting a tune on a drone, or a recurring pattern, or two melodies against each other. Anothe clear link with Indian classical music is in the concept of 'taal' a very slow pulse of a set number of beats which repeats, creating structiure and a frame work for improvisation.
Although some concepts of 'taal' are something present in the music of Hello! Welcome!, you don't need to understand them to appreciate the music. The body of learning that each musician brings makes for deep currents of movement and life, underneath a stream of music which shimmers and dances.
