Calling all young people aged 12-18 with an interest in history, puppetry and the arts, curation and events management!

Snap & Beyond is an exciting opportunity to develop a brand new public exhibition exploring the history of puppetry in Norwich.

From the medieval guilds parading across Tombland, through to modern day shadow and film work, dive into the amazing history of puppetry in the fine city and curate and present your research for the public to enjoy.

No experience required! Perfect for anyone keen to grow their leadership and cultural skills.

Thanks to funding from The Norwich Freeman’s Charity, this is a free opportunity. But places must be booked.

You will:

• Produce, promote and manage an exhibition
• Curate and present information through art, writing, film, audio and other media
• Learn and develop research and creative skills from professional artists and curators
• Enhance your CV and learn more about heritage and creative careers

Further Information

When: Weekly sessions running from 27 April – 20 July on a Thursday (excluding Thursday 1 June). 4.30 - 6pm.

Key Dates:

• 15 June will be a site visit to The Museum of Norwich. 
  
• 6 July and 13 July will be longer sessions running from 4:30 – 7:30pm with snacks provided.
  
• Saturday 15 July will be a whole day session (exact timings TBC).
  
• Thursday 20 July will be the exhibition set up at The Museum of Norwich from 4:30-6pm.
  
• Friday 21 July in the afternoon/evening will be the exhibition launch at The Museum of Norwich.

Where: At Norwich Puppet Theatre. Some sessions may include trips out to heritage or cultural venues in Norwich. These will be funded by the project.

Who: Anyone aged 12-18 living within a 20-mile radius of the City of Norwich Guildhall.

Who’s Who

Sam Webber – Project Manager

Sam began producing and directing theatre at aged 16. He gained his BA in Scriptwriting & Performance from UEA, before going on to teach drama in local schools. He currently teaches Acting on the HNC Performing Arts Course at The Garage as well as working as a freelance director and drama facilitator across Norwich. He is heavily involved in theatres across the city, having regularly directed/performed/produced/written for Norwich’s various stages over the last few years.

Sam’s special interest lies in medieval history, especially Mystery Plays and new adaptations of older works, breaking expectations and dramatic conventions to find something new in otherwise well-known stories.

Jade Anderson – Project Curator

JMCAnderson is an Artist, Community Curator and Facilitator which is underpinned by her socially engaged practice; to share experiences and to co-work with communities as a way of finding your place and belonging as a citizen. Anderson uses language, text, paint and performance within her artwork in order to convey narratives and stories, with recent work reflecting on the duality of her own mixed heritage and otherness. Language is used both visually and linguistically to explore contemporary societal issues and the celebration of identities. She is interested in collective thinking, where people from the past and present become the medium or material of the work produced to raise awareness, educate and encourage conversations.

Anderson has been an Associate Curator for 'We: You, Me' exhibition (2017) and Programme Assistant (2019-2020) at Firstsite, Creative Associate for ‘Every Step Is A Different Height’ directed by Artists Lone Twin (2021 - 2022), Exhibition Curator for town-wide climate exhibition ‘Manifesto’ with Collusion (2022) and is currently the Coordinator for youth led charity Young Norfolk Arts Trust. She has facilitated an array of activities with co-creation at the forefront and has had projects commissioned such as ‘I Am…’ as part of Norfolk & Norwich Festival (2021), ‘In transit, our memory fragments’ at Chelsea Space, London (2022), ‘Culture Connects’ at PRIMEYARC, Great Yarmouth (2022) and is currently an IN-SITU emerging Artist nominee (2023).
