Overview

You are invited to join us in learning about the history of Norwood Park, and how the Hall and Estate have changed over the centuries.

Background

Norwood was originally a deer park in the ownership of the Archbishops of York. During the Commonwealth period it passed into the hands of Edward Cludd, who built a brick house on the site.

In 1764 the lease passed to John Sutton who demolished the Cludd house and built the present hall. The park was landscaped, with trees cleared to open up views of the house as well as to enable views towards Southwell Minster. Although the park as a whole is not formally designated, the garden temple, kitchen garden walls, ha-ha and icehouse, all of which date from this period, have survived and are listed.

The estate was bought by Lewis Randle Starkey in 1881, after which an orchard was planted to the south of the kitchen garden. A commercial orchard was added in 1910, and extensive areas of pear and apple orchards have since been planted on the open parkland.

Norwood Park remans in the hands of the Starkey family A 9 hole golf course was established in the 1990s, and this has now developed into an 18 hole championship course.
