OffBeat is back! We have had some time to recuperate post-festival and are now ready to resume our regular programming of amazing British docs at Walthamstow Trades Hall and SET Social. And what better way to get back into the swing of things than to screen one of our all-time favourite documentaries, Marc Isaacs’ Lift (2001), which is celebrating it’s 25th anniversary of its release this July.
Lift sees director Marc Isaacs position himself in the lift of an inner-city London estate for two weeks, documenting and interviewing the residents of the block. Lift is an iconic film in the world of documentary for its simple approach but powerful execution. I will make you laugh in one moment and weep in the next. Marc Isaacs has since made many other brilliant films which explores British society and divisions in the so-called “United” Kingdom and we are lucky enough to have him here to give an introduction before the film.
Lift will also be accompanied by screenings of other documentaries beforehand.
There will also be copies of Lift, a 25-year anniversary special edition book. Each edition in this special limited run is hand signed by the author and includes a loose- leaf page and a downloadable link to the original film.
“Moving fluidly across time and space like an edited film, 25 Years Ago, is as much grounded in my life as it is in the Lift itself. With a focus on both the joys and sorrows of the immigrant communities I describe, I hope it provides a unique ‘behind the scenes’ or ‘making of’ accompaniment to the photographic images in the book and (of course) the original film itself.”
