Finding Phong《Đi Tìm Phong》(2015)

Join us this Thursday evening for a community screening of 'Finding Phong'. The screening will be followed by an informal discussion, allowing viewers to reflect on the themes evoked in the film, and share their own stories.

Finding Phong 《Đi Tìm Phong》 2015 (93mins)

Phong grew up in a small town in the center of Vietnam - the youngest of six children. From the time she was young, Phong felt like she was a girl with a mismatched boy’s body. Not until she moved to Hanoi to attend university at age 20 did Phong discover that she was not the only one in the world with this predicament. Her dream to ‘find herself’ by physically changing sex becomes a reality several years later. The movie follows Phong’s struggle during these years, with excerpts from an intimate video journal, along with encounters with family, friends and doctors - all of whom must come to terms with Phong's determination to become a “complete girl”.

Directors: Swann Dubus & Trấn Phương Thảo

French Swann and Vietnamese Thao co-directed WITH OR WITHOUT ME (2011) was featured at Torino International Film Festival, and also won Grand Prize at the 2011 International DMZ Doc Fest in South Korea.  They are husband-and-wife, and are based in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Phương Anh (PA) works part-time as a Publishing Executive at Tilted Axis Press and as an Income Inclusion Officer at ESEA Community Centre. Their translations and writings have been featured on Asympote, Words Without Borders, Modern Poetry in Translation and in Here Was Once The Sea: An Anthology of Southeast Asian Eco-Writing, among others. Phương Anh is part of the An Việt Archives' Steering Panel Committee.
