Abstracting Shapes and Color from the Landscape with Kami Mendlik OPA
Fri Jun 14, 2024 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM CDT
Online, Zoom
Description
Kami Mendlik’s lifelong passion is the study of color and sharing with others a process to help achieve the illusion of light and vibration in their paintings. There are countless nuances in color that can make it challenging for the painter. We want to put it ALL in there, but this leaves little room for creating the illusion of light. Through years of teaching and painting, she has found that the eye can continue to develop how we see color. The key to creating the illusion of light is not only learning the properties of color, but also deciding what needs to be in the painting and more importantly, what doesn’t! Simplifying, both the shapes and the color averages is a key component to bringing a painting to its greatest potential.
In this hour with Kami, she will bring you through a visual and articulated journey of how she sees and abstracts shapes from a scene to create paintings with a strong carrying power from across the room. During this process she will share with you her strategy of seeing and painting the relationship of one shape of color compared to another, color relativity!
Kami Mendlik is a nationally and internationally recognized painter, instructor, author of “Color Relativity”, and creator of Planal Fruit®. In 2008, Kami Mendlik started and founded the St Croix River School of Painting in Stillwater MN where she teaches the fundamentals of representational painting with a special emphasis on color.
