Are you proud to be Nigerian?
Five years after our first Nigerian Exchange, we return with the second edition - this time focusing on dialogue between two of Nigeria’s southern ethnic groups: Igbo and Edo.
We’ll be sitting down with our brothers and sisters from Edoid communities (including Bini, Esan, and others) to explore both the differences and similarities between us. Expect an honest, interactive conversation about culture, stereotypes, and the future of our communities in the diaspora.
Okwu ID is a community and educational platform that engages African diaspora youth through events and discussion. Our goal is to create safe spaces for young Africans to challenge ideas, celebrate identity, and better understand each other.
Ages: 18–35 only
Refreshments provided.
The day will be filled with games, ice-breakers, and discussion topics such as:
-
Language retention: How are Igbo and Edo youth maintaining their mother tongues?
-
Representation: Do Nigerian pop culture and global exports highlight Igbo and Edo cultures fairly?
-
Stereotypes: How do jokes and assumptions about Edo and Igbo people affect relationships and identity?
-
Culture theft and attire: Why are Edo / Igbo cultural attires so often confused or claimed by others?
- Cultural domination and disappearance: Which traditions are surviving, and which are being lost?
This will be an interactive session, with plenty of opportunities for audience participation.
Portions of the event will be filmed for our YouTube channel and socials.
