SOLSTICE ENSEMBLE FREE CONCERT AT OAC

Members of Solstice Ensemble

Solstice Ensemble at IPR studios

Join Solstice Ensemble for a special FREE performance at Oliver Art Center! The Solstice Ensemble plays everything from baroque to tango for the unusual combination of flute, violin, recorder, cello, and piano. These five musicians initially connected as members of the Benzie Area Symphony Orchestra, and now they play together as a chamber group.

Ruth van Baak Griffioen (recorder) is a musicologist who earned a PhD at Stanford University and then taught at William and Mary for several decades, before wising up and retiring to northwestern Michigan. She also works as a translator from Dutch and German, and in retirement runs the YouTube channel “The Bach Hymnbook,” which presents one chorale by Bach each weekday with singable translations in modern English.

Carolyn Edwards (violin and viola) is a recently retired Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra member (33 years), and continues to teach and perform in Pittsburgh. Prior to that, she lived and worked as a freelancer in the Boston area. Her schooling was Curtis Institute of Music, Boston University, and a BA from Smith College. She was born and raised in Detroit, and migrates back to MI during the summers.

Flutist Carole Scott is enjoying retirement from teaching middle school aged musicians, although she does pop in from time to time to remember the day-to-day challenges and occasional euphoria. Nowadays consumed with gardening, private lessons studio and keeping up with her fellow orchestra, band, musical pit and chamber musicians, she is happy to putz with weeds, practice whenever the mood strikes and is grateful for the afternoon nap.

Peter Paolini - Cellist
Lives in the Detroit area and studied cello at Wayne State University with Thaddeus Markiewicz of the Detroit Symphony. He has played
in many ensembles and Orchestras including the Windsor Symphony, The Dearborn Symphony, and the Michigan Philharmonic which includes working with their In-school Programs to introduce Musical Instruments to young students.

Douglas Scott is sought after as a soloist, collaborative keyboardist, composer, arranger, and conductor in a wide range of genres. He graduated from Michigan State University, where he studied with Ralph Votapek. He is currently President of the Grosse Ile Musicale, and Music Director of Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church. Doug enjoys participating in the music scene in and around Benzie County during the summer.
