Acting for video games
Join this unique acting masterclass with renowned improviser, voice actor and coach Alan Marriott and video game performance director Mark Estdale for a journey into the depth of acting for games, building stronger and clearer characters.
Games are unique amongst all scripted performance media, as actors can be recorded without the actor ever reading the script in advance. The work of the actor is in being their character and living in flow. What enables the game actor to live is the container of who they are, and the why and what of intention within the game world.
Because the actor does not see the script prior to performance, they are in the moment and out of their head, in flow. This is a natural state that can never be captured if the actor has read the script in advance. If the script has been read they can only perform 'as if' whatever is happening is happening. 'As if' is 'as if', it can never be natural. It is always a simulation.
In improv theatre, the stage is the performer’s safe and courageous place where support, listening, being present, connection, and clear choices are what makes the magic work. Like what can be done with games and unlike all other scripted performances, actors live in the moment, accepting, building, where the nuance of their character work is the icing on the cake.
This series of classes are laser focused on the craft of living performance and deepening character precision with confidence. They are part classroom, part exercise and part performing in the studio under performance conditions. This is a no holds barred performer's workout. Hear-see-do with an emphasis on the doing.
