Creature & Monster Voice Acting: Advanced Recording Intensive
A one-day advanced workshop for actors and voice performers who already have experience with creature, monster, extreme vocal work, or who previously attended the Creature & Monster Voice Acting Masterclass at OMUK.
This intensive is designed to simulate the reality of a professional creature voice recording session for video games and film. Instead of focusing on the foundations of creature vocal work, this class dives directly into performance, direction, timing, variation, resonance shaping, and recording-to-picture workflow.
Throughout the day, participants will work in a real studio environment performing creature actions to video animations while being directed in the booth by Sébastien Croteau from The Monster Factory.
Each participant will choose a creature or character archetype from a prepared list featuring dedicated action sets and video references. Based on their choice, they will record a wide range of performances including:
- Breathing and idle states
- Movement and physical efforts
- Attacks and combat vocalizations
- Pain reactions, impacts, and recovery sounds
- Deaths
This advanced intensive focuses heavily on what actually happens during production:
- Performing to picture and animation timing
- Creating useful and believable variations
- Understanding creature physicality and readable intent
- Sustaining a vocal identity across multiple takes
- Responding quickly to direction
- Managing stamina and performance consistency during demanding sessions
- Understanding action types and stress levels
- Recording workflow realities for games and film
Participants will also experiment with practical external sound-shaping approaches often used during creature exploration and sound design work, including:
- PVC and cardboard resonance tubes
- Hand filtering and obstruction techniques
- Mouth and cavity shaping
- Layering concepts and performance experimentation
The workshop functions as a practical creature VO recording lab. Participants will perform, receive live direction, adjust takes, review playback, and learn from both individual and group recording sessions.
This is not a beginner workshop.
Participants are expected to already have some familiarity with creature vocal work, vocal effects, or extreme voice performance. The focus of this intensive is not learning a single “monster sound,” but learning how to perform creature vocals in a professional recording environment with control, adaptability, consistency, and sustainability.
Sessions run from 10:00 to 18:00.
Who is this workshop for?
- Actors who already have experience with creature or extreme vocal work
- Participants from previous OMUK Creature & Monster workshops
- Voice performers looking to push further into production-style creature performance
- Actors interested in recording-to-picture workflow for games and film
- Performers wanting deeper experience with direction, timing, variation, and creature physicality
- Creature vocalists interested in advanced resonance and sound-shaping techniques
Please note that participant places are limited due to the highly practical and individualized nature of the workshop.
