Nerikomi Workshop: Ceramics inspired by geology with Kim Colebrook

In this talk and workshop, Kim Colebrook will explore her inspiration for the pieces on view at ‘Alchemy’ and show how she embeds narrative within her making, using the Japanese technique of Nerikomi.

As well as sharing her journey into ceramics, she will demonstrate her techniques and you will be able to make a block of porcelain for use at home.

Kim’s work starts with blocks of clay inlaid with coloured clays and oxides that relate to the coal measures, in a loose style of Nerikomi. She then uses various techniques to expose the layers, by rolling, moulding, burning and carving into (Kurinuki). Often the layers are hidden within her forms but become visible with light.

Join the artist to put her techniques to practice and to learn more about the geology, people and history of South Wales through craft.

Materials:

Please bring an apron and feel free to bring your own tools if you have them. Otherwise, they will be provided.

About the artist:

Kim Colebrook is a ceramic artist based in Abergavenny, South Wales. Much of her work is inspired by a passion for telling the stories of this area. She aims to incorporate texture and narrative in her ceramics, often creating very simple forms that will carry the intended message. Her work is hand built or cast, integrating textures, colours and oxides.

Practical Information:

Access to our garden can be steep, please wear sturdy shoes. We don't currently have access to different mobilities.

There is no visitor parking so we encourage you to cycle, walk or take public transport. Google Maps Directions

There is paid parking on Highgate from 10am - 12pm and free before and after.

We unfortunately cannot allow any furry friends unless they are guide/support animals. Please let us know in advance if you need to bring them with you.

The Glasshouse (Our indoor space) is not heated so please dress for the weather.

Children are the responsibility of their parents or guardians and should not be left unattended at any time when they are on site.

If you have an allergy to a particular plant or insect, please get in touch before attending our site.

The gardens are a habitat for a variety of pollinators, including busy bees. Please respect them and do not approach the beehives for their safety and yours.

We have ponds - members of the public are not permitted in the pond at any time.

Do not ingest any plants, mushrooms or fungi that you find on site.

There are two first aid kits on site, one in the glasshouse and one in the dome.
