Baesianz & OmVed present: Chuey. A short film by Sami Kimberley

Presented by Baesianz in collaboration with OmVed Gardens, the evening takes form around the premiere of Chuey, a short film by Sami Kimberley, accompanied by live music from the artists who scored it.


Moving between Malaysia and London, migration and memory, plants and people, the film explores the life of Chuey Loh: 


Since moving from Malaysia to London in the 1970s, Malaysian-Chinese Buddhist and therapist Chuey has transformed the garden of her family home into a sanctuary of global flora; blending plants from across continents, her garden and personal story entwine in quiet narratives of migration, memory, and finding belonging. Set in the suburbs of North-West London as summer winds down, this meditative short invites us into her intimate reflections, offering a story of resilience, unity, and nature's power to dissolve barriers.


The evening unfolds with live sonic performances by artists Ans M and mui zyu featuring organic soundscapes, traditional instrumentation and sound design that inspired the film's accompaniment.

Afterwards, Chuey and Sami will sit down together for a conversation and an audience Q&A around the film's themes and the lessons we can take from it.

What to Expect:

• 6:00 PM — Doors open 
  Explore the gardens and enjoy the surroundings. Dry bar with non-alcoholic botanical drinks is available for purchase.
• 7:00 PM — Welcome
  A short introduction to the evening and the film.
• 7:05 PM — Live performance by Ans M
  Ans M will perform an ambient set expanding on the score composed for the film, incorporating field recordings taken in China and Malaysia from the past few years.
• 7:20 PM — Chuey screening 
  The premiere screening of Sami Kimberley’s short film ‘Chuey’ (runtime 6m 28s)
• 7:30 PM — Conversation & audience Q&A
  Chuey and Sami reflect on the film, its themes and what we can learn from Chuey’s story, followed by questions from the audience.
• 7.50 PM — Live performance by mui zyu 
  A live performance from mui zyu, bringing the sounds and instruments of the film’s score into the garden.
  
• 8:30 PM — Finish 

This event will take place in the Barn and is suitable for adults and young people aged 16 and over.

Baesianz 

Baesianz is a London-based interdisciplinary collective that cultivates Asian-led narratives from all over the globe, founded in 2019. Born from a shared need to nurture their Asian roots and uplift Asian artists and communities, the collective organises multidisciplinary events including exhibitions, film screenings, fundraisers, workshops, residencies, and performances.

Sami Kimberley is a London-based interdisciplinary creative and regenerative practitioner working at the intersection of culture and ecology across storytelling, design and community organising. Her practice explores the relationships between people, place, and the living world, using creative mediums to share knowledge, connect communities, and reimagine our relationship with nature.

Chuey 

Chuey has initiated a collective called “Living Together with Nature” to bring together a growing number of people who would like to talk, explore and share dreams of living creatively with our natural environment. The two consistent questions we ask are, “How do we live?” and “What do we do?” This is the basis of the contemplative approach to the Buddhist understanding of interdependence. As all life on earth is interconnected, how do we act as responsible and responsive beings as part of the “more-than-human” world?

A note on accessibility: The gardens are set on a hill, featuring steep paths and may not be suitable for those with limited mobility. Wheelchair access across the site is currently limited while landscape works are underway. For events, there is drop-off access by car to the Barn main building. If you require wheelchair drop-off, please get in touch with us ahead of time. There is an accessible toilet located inside the Barn.
