LET'S GROW A MOVEMENT: A Sound-Inspired Breadmaking Workshop

Sun Jul 12, 2026 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM PDT Porridge Collective (2801 Beverly Blvd), 90026

Artist Umi Hsu will lead a scallion sourdough bread workshop that dives into the sound, taste, smell, and the transformative potential of yeast. With impromptu engagement with PoCo resident artist Minh Phan, Hsu will facilitate a living thought fermentation on catalytic impulse and mycelial time in relation to social movements. We will make revolutionary bread, listen to Hsu’s audio documentary How To Grow A Movement, and tune into the yeast dance mixes from Community Assembly, Hsu’s sound installation included in the Wild Wonderful Sporadic Kin exhibit at One Gallery.

Inspired by the science and sound of the sugar fungus, this micro-ethnographic sound work explores the concept of Critical Yeast, a term coined by peacebuilding practitioner and scholar John Paul Lederach. As an alternative to critical mass, Critical Yeast refers to the catalytic coming together of a group of individuals who are not like-minded or like-situated, and can transform in a context of conflict.

This program is co-presented by One Institute and PoCo as a part of, Wild Wonderful Sporadic Kin, supported by the California Community Foundation.

Space is limited. RSVPs are required.
