Rediscover the joys of making with your hands and engage with the ultimate portable technology - the book.
Learn to make a multi section hardback book and rediscover the joys of making with your hands, engaging with the ultimate portable technology - the book. In this workshop, Kate will guide you step-by-step in the traditional craft of bookbinding. You will learn to fold paper into sections, sew those sections together using French link stitch, tip on endpapers and make a hardcover case with cloth spine and decorative paper sidings before casing in. These processes form the bedrock of all Western bookbinding and you will leave with enough basic bookbinding skills that will enable you to continue and elaborate at home. This session is suitable for all (8+ children to be supervised). All materials and tools will be provided. Some of those tools are sharp!
Kate is a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders, a Homo Faber Master Artisan and a QEST scholar. Her books are in collections at the British Library, Bodleian, Yale and Berkeley Universities as well as many private collections all over the world. She represented bookbinding as part of the Harewood craft Biennial. She is a regular binder to The Booker Prize and featured in a film on BBC The One Show exploring this. She teaches bookbinding at Bath Spa University and West Dean College. She also runs private courses from her workshop and regularly lectures.
