Join Ontario Nature at Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy’s Orlowski Nature Preserve to learn more about our Long-term Monitoring Protocol (LTMP) for Ontario’s snakes. Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy (EBC) protects habitat at over 250 nature preserves on the Saugeen Bruce Peninsula and beyond, which support an abundance of wildlife, including several snake species. EBC is establishing an LTMP site at Orlowski Nature Preserve in 2026 to begin monitoring snakes in this important region for Ontario’s biodiversity.

At this event, you will learn about snake ecology, threats, and habitat stewardship from Ontario Nature staff. You will participate in a demonstration of the LTMP using existing cover boards and gain training on identifying suitable snake habitat, setting up a monitoring transect, and properly handling, identifying, sexing and aging Ontario’s snakes.

To Bring: We will be running the event in areas where Massassauga Rattlesnakes might be present. Please wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. Tall rubber boots are recommended, if possible. Please also bring a re-fillable water bottle and snacks.

Weather: This event will run rain or shine. If there is severe weather, the event will be rescheduled.

Meeting location: The meeting location will be at Orlowski Nature Preserve, South Bruce Peninsula. Directions using Google Maps. The Orlowski Nature Preserve is located just outside of Wiarton, approximately 40 minutes from Owen Sound.

This training event is generously supported by the Hodgson Family Foundation.

By participating in the event, you agree to abide by the Event Code of Conduct.
