Open Data Manchester, Transparency International UK and the UK Anti-Corruption Coalition invite you to join a co-ordination meeting to discuss proposals for the next open government action plan.

What: Open government is an international initiative which brings government and civil society together to work collaboratively on a set of agreed activities and outcomes using participative and accountable ways of working that promote trust, transparency, and integrity. The vision we work towards is a partnership that strengthens democracy and delivers better societal outcomes.

The action plan presents areas of work that will bring together government and civil society to deliver policy proposals that can meet that vision, and with ways of working that promote transparency.

The UK government is currently looking for ideas for inclusion in the next action plan. This meeting will briefly introduce open government and the action plan process before identifying areas of work that those attending think should be prioritised and where open government approaches might add value. Previous action plans have included commitments to work on procurement, anti-corruption and open data. You can read more about the sorts of policy areas open government action plans include here https://www.opengovpartnership.org/policy-areas/

Why should I attend: This is a fantastic opportunity to bring together skills and knowledge from across the UK to put forward ideas for work in partnership with decision-makers in government to drive forward impactful change. You have been identified by an open government civil society partner as potentially having something to contribute. If you have some work planned that could benefit from the structured ways of partnership working promoted by open government, this is your chance to discuss with others and to start to draft a 250 word pitch for inclusion in the action plan.

Open Government approaches can:

  • connect you with relevant expertise, and decision makers

  • strengthen accountability of government with clear milestones and public reporting

  • improve delivery through capacity-building partnerships with civil society, academia, communities, and government

  • increase trust and legitimacy of decisions by making them transparent and accountable

  • improve policy quality by involving diverse voices and expertise to help shape and deliver solutions

If you'd like more information on how the process works, the UK Open Government Network (OGN) - which helps coordinate civil society around the action plan (and which Open Data Manchester, Transparency International UK and the Anti-Corruption Coalition are part of) - are holding two online information sessions before our call for evidence workshop. You can sign up below:

The OGN website also has some other helpful resources.

Important information: This event will take place online via Zoom. We will send out a link to join the session on the morning of the event and 30 minutes before the start time. If you have any questions or accessibility needs, get in touch with Julian at julian@opendatamanchester.org.uk
