So what happened - The data behind the elections

It is hard not to be distracted by what goes on in politics at a national level, but outside the Westminster bubble, good people are giving up their time to ensure their communities are represented in the development and scrutiny of how local authorities develop, manage and deliver services.

On 7 May, approximately 134 local elections will be held, electing approximately 5,000 councillors. These council seats were last contested in 2022. Although local elections are fought primarily on local agendas, they're often seen as a barometer of national political opinion.

Scotland and Wales will also hold devolved elections on the same day, with broader national ramifications.
