We are pleased to present Hack4Tourism Messina Climate Challenge: Adapting Tourism to Changing Climates, a hackathon aiming to revolutionize the future of tourism in the province of Messina by proactively addressing the challenges posed by climate change. This event is organized by Open Data Playground, under the scientific direction of university professors and local entrepreneurs. It will be held online from May 11th to 19th, with an onsite finale scheduled for May 27th in Messina.

The hackathon invites university and high school students from Messina to develop innovative solutions to steer the tourism sector toward a sustainable future. Through the analysis of open data (ISTAT, Bank of Italy, ISPRA, and others) and the development of new tourist paths, participants will be called to explore the impact of climate change on tourism and propose strategies for a resilient tourism industry.

This initiative not only aims to promote sustainable tourism that responsibly values the natural and cultural resources of the region but also offers participants the opportunity to access advanced technological resources and find job opportunities through our sponsors.

Thanks to the collaboration with Palantir Foundry, participants will have access to an enterprise data science development solution. Furthermore, the Fastweb Digital Academy will provide training and resources to support the development of skills necessary to tackle the challenges of the hackathon.

Hack4Tourism Messina Climate Challenge is open to students from the University and High Schools of Messina and its province.

Teams will be engaged in creating algorithms and marketing strategies to promote more equitable and sustainable tourism, valuing the natural beauty and cultural richness of the Messina province, minimizing environmental impact, and maximizing benefits for local communities.

Hack4Tourism Messina Climate Challenge: Adapting Tourism to Changing Climates Registration Procedure

• PHASE 1: Register Your Participation
  • Form your team (consisting of 3 to 6 members) and proceed to purchase individual tickets.
  • Visit the event page on Ticket Tailor and select "Book your spot on Palantir".
  • Purchase a ticket appropriate to your status (university or high school student).
    • Fill out the registration form with the following information:
      • First and last name
      • Email address
      • LinkedIn profile
      • University affiliation
      • Type of degree program (BSc/MSc/PhD)
      • Team name
      • Indicate whether you are the team leader by selecting "YES".
• PHASE 2: Access to Resources
  • For university teams: you will receive credentials to access the Palantir Foundry platform, where you will find data and instructions for the event.
  • For high school teams: you will have access to online folders containing all the necessary material for the event.
  • For everyone: you will have access to learning materials made available by Palantir & Fastweb Digital Academy
• PHASE 3: Hackathon (12th - 19th May)
  • Once the hackathon is started, work with your team mates to develop your solution
• PHASE 4: Final Awards (27th May)
