Crow Canyon Petroglyph Tour

One of the most epic petroglyph experiences anywhere on Earth is a remote location south of Aztec New Mexico on BLM land called Crow Canyon. Located southeast of Aztec, NM, in the Largo Canyon region is the Crow Canyon Archeological District. It is within this area that the Bureau of Land Management has identified pueblitos, cliff storage structures, and the best-known collection of 16th-18th century Navajo petroglyphs (carved rock art) in the American Southwest. In addition, earlier Ancestral Puebloan images can also be found among the Navajo rock art in Crow Canyon. Hundreds of images of animals, humans, supernatural beings, and other images such as corn plants and bows and arrows can be found. Most of the images are clustered in what are referred to as "panels," on the lower cliff faces of the canyon. Rex Bear and I will guide you to all of the main petroglyph panels in three regions of Crow Canyon, The Main Panel, Big Warrior Panel and the famous 44 Panel with an option for visiting the Shaft House Pueblito. This is not your average day hike, the terrain is rocky and sometimes difficult and requires the participant to be able to hike 6 miles or more in a single day. If you have never done something like this please do not even consider attemting to join us. Participants must be in top physical condition and able to carry in ample water and food(snacks). The Tour will be at 3 locations and we will move as a group from one venue to the next. The access roads are sand and dirt and require 4WD and good clearance so plan accordingly. In the event of rain an alternate plan will be devised. We will have refreshments and snacks available for participants at all stops and throuought the day.
