What is the true sound of a red-orange sun emerging just above the horizon? What’s the sonic equivalent of a monolithic butte towering high above a vacant valley, as menacing thunderheads form in the distance?
The answers lie in the atmospheric & sprawling debut from Cowboy Sadness - a new collaborative project from The Antlers, Bing & Ruth, & Port St. Willow.
The stylistic signatures of each member - Moore’s heavy, undulating organs, Silberman’s melancholic guitars, & Principe’s galloping, hypnotic drums - form thick textures, cavernous spaces, & deep grooves.
“Selected Jambient Works Vol.1” is the summation of over a decade of work. With sounds more akin to Pink Floyd and Can than John Cage, the album is an odyssey through vivid, mercurial environments for the listener to inhabit continuously, unpeopled landscapes where signs of life are rare, but exquisite when uncovered.
Astrid Sonne is a Danish artist, composer, producer and viola player, currently based in London.
Her new album Great Doubt (Escho, 2024) is an addictive collection of chamber pop miniatures that melds her intimate, unadorned vocals with woozy electronics, understated string/piano arrangements and raw, unprocessed programming.
‘Great Doubt’ follows an already acclaimed discography — ‘Outside Of Your Lifetime’, ‘Cliodynamics’, and ‘Human Lines’ — that crafted a signature sonic world, positioning the classical with the modern: baroque moods and arpeggiated synths; choral voices and electronic experiments.
Key performances and commissions to date include: Berlin Atonal – where she performed new work Ephemeral with a choir, Rewire Festival – who commissioned her to write and perform Cycles of Lost and Found, and Strøm Festival – where she unvailed site specific compositions for the ruins under the Danish Parliament and a stretch of the Copenhagen Metro.
“Sonne manipulates stray elements of 20th-century modernism and beyond to illuminate her curious, elliptical songs… pioneering a gloriously odd, twitchy, off-kilter form of R&B“ — The Guardian (Contemporary Album of the Month)
“a delicious garden of sound to explore… liquid natural magic“ — The Wire
