Description

On July 1, we celebrate the opening of a new exhibit of work from the remarkable artist, activist and author, Molly Crabapple.Alongside the exhibit will be a scroll of photos from Boss Workers, an exhibit from The Economic Hardship Reporting Project. Journalist and poet Alissa Quart from the EHRP will moderate a special panel in honor of the exhibit that features Crabapple, poet/playwright/labor organizer Rodrigo Toscano, and poet and Hudson alderperson Rebecca Wolff. Together this remarkable group of artists and activists will think through what makes art political, and examine the relationships between the artist, the artisan, and the worker and how can all of these identities join forces to support a more creative and just society.

Armed with her paintbrush, the illustrator and journalist is redefining reportage with her portraits of Guantánamo Bay, Trump and Syrian refugees. — The Guardian

A giant photo installation produced by Economic Hardship Reporting Project will be on display alongside Crabapple’s work. The banner represents six burgeoning worker co-ops, ranging from a California pizza place to a New York City ride-share company, shot by six photographers from across the country.Molly Crabapple is an artist and writer based in New York. She is the author of two books, Drawing Blood and Brothers of the Gun (with Marwan Hisham), which was long-listed for a National Book Award in 2018. Her reportage has been published in The New York Times, New York Review of Books, The Paris Review, Vanity Fair, The Guardian, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker and elsewhere. Her art is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art. Her animations have been nominated for three Emmys and won an Edward R. Murrow Award.
