PLEASE NOTE THAT BECAUSE OF THE SNOW/SLUSH ON THE SCULPTURE TODAY, GUESTS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO WALK ON THE SCULPTURE ITSELF. ALSO, CLOUDS IN THE SKY MEAN WE WILL NOT HAVE STAR-GAZING. OTHERWISE, ALL WILL PROCEED AS PLANNED AND BE MAGICAL & LOVELY!

Join us for a special celebration with music, a lantern walk and star-gazing.

On the winter solstice, the sun travels its shortest path through the sky — it is the shortest day and longest night of the year as well as the first day of winter for all of us in the Northern Hemisphere. We celebrate the winter solstice and the return of light.

We will celebrate with some of our favorite traditions from around the world — including a performance from a local chorus, decorating some pine trees with edible decorations for the birds, making lanterns and having a lantern walk, and making wishes for the new year together, using simple rituals around the fire pit.

At the center of our celebration will be a look at the night sky on the occasion of the changing season and earth’s furthest tilt away from the sun. This will include a special guided look at the stars with Mid-Hudson Astronomical Association. With their telescope, we will be able to see Jupiter, the rings of Saturn and who knows what other astronomical wonders. We will also welcome astrologer Cory Nakasue who will both speak to us about the coming season’s forecast and offer readings

We will have Mexican hot chocolate as well as snacks for sale. Guests can wander our grounds and peruse our holiday gift sale as well as partake in the celebration.

ALSO:  Astrologer Cory Nakasue will be offering mini astrology consultations! Do you have a specific question that could use an astrological perspective? Are you curious about your sun, moon, or rising sign? Are you an astrology student who’d like some guidance on advanced topics? Sign up in advance (caroline@opus40.org)! Please know your city and time of birth, if possible. $30 for a 20 minute session + 20% off all services booked in 2023

*The MHAA is a group of amateur astronomy enthusiasts, center in the lower mid-Hudson Valley, whose purpose is to educate and delight the general public with the night sky.
