Writing about your work: turning your professional experience into compelling non-fiction

Facilitated by Bev Thomas

Two consecutive three- hour workshops

Friday 16th and Friday 23rd October

13:00 hrs. to 16:00 hrs. UK Time

By Zoom

Using the craft of storytelling, this workshop will help you develop your idea into an engaging narrative.

Now, more than ever, there is a hunger for learning about work that explores the human condition, but if you’re immersed in a specialist field, it can be hard to translate these ideas and concepts to a universal audience. Whether it’s an article in a newspaper or magazine, or starting a Substack or a blog, the ability to write about complex ideas in an accessible and interesting way is a skill – and this workshop will show you how.

Two consecutive three-hour workshops will cover the following:

• What do you want to write about? Clarity about your focus

• Who do you want to write for? Knowing your audience

• What’s the story? - key fundamentals of storytelling and their role in writing non-fiction articles

• Procrastination, and the conscious and unconscious blocks to creativity

• Confidentiality and anonymising your work

• Finishing a first draft - now what?

The workshops will include teaching, writing exercises, group discussion and feedback and will be facilitated by Bev Thomas. It will be a small group, so limited places available.

It can be helpful (but not essential) to come to the workshop with something in mind that you would like to write about.
