Use of HCL in Pregnancy – Benefits are system specific….
Thu 16 May 2024 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM BST
Online, Zoom
Description
Abstract:
We will review recent diabetes technology advances which are transforming the management of diabetes before, during and after pregnancy. We will examine the benefits and barriers to using hybrid closed-loop (HCL) insulin delivery during type 1 diabetes pregnancy and focus on which systems deliver clinical benefits for mothers and babies. We will share practical tips for starting and optimising HCL use throughout pregnancy, including during labour and birth.
Educational outcomes:
- Understand the impact of HCL use on maternal glucose outcomes
- Understand which HCL systems offer clinically relevant time-in-range improvements
- Increase confidence starting and optimising HCL use during pregnancy
About our speakers:
Professor Helen Murphy
Dr Helen Murphy is a Professor of Medicine (Diabetes and Antenatal Care) at the University of East Anglia, and a practicing clinician (Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust). She co-led the CONCEPTT Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) trial, which led to changes in clinical practice. Her work in collaboration with Professor Roman Hovorka, demonstrates that closed-loop systems will transform the future clinical management of T1D before, during and after pregnancy. Based on pivotal studies, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the CamAPS FX closed-loop system is licensed for use during T1D pregnancy and endorsed by the 2023 NICE technical appraisal for women who are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
Helen also serves as clinical lead for the National Pregnancy in Diabetes (NPID) audit, which directly informs national healthcare policy. Supported by JDRF, Diabetes UK, and the NIHR, her research is changing the management of diabetes in pregnancy.
Dr Tara Lee
Tara Lee is a Clinical Research Fellow at the University of East Anglia and the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Having qualified in 2012, she completed postgraduate Core Medical Training and is currently training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the East of England.
Tara is the current DRWF Sutherland-Earl Clinical Fellow and undertaking a PhD at UEA where her work focusses on type 1 diabetes in pregnancy and the use of diabetes technologies. As well as her own studies, she is a co-investigator on the AiDAPT (Automated insulin Delivery Amongst Pregnant women with Type 1 diabetes) and PROTECT (Pregnancy Outcomes using continuous glucose monitoring Technology in pregnant women with Type 2 diabetes) studies.
