Alan Turing's Altrincham

Fresh from his brilliant years at Bletchley Park, the codebreaker Alan Turing moved to Manchester in 1948 to use the world's first computer. It was in Hale and Altrincham that Turing found intellectual and emotional friendship that sustained him during the development of  what we now call the Turing Test for machine intelligence, and it is here that we can find witnesses to his remarkable personality and tragically short life. Jonathan Swinton will give a talk based on his book Alan Turing's Manchester, bringing to life the  remarkable men and women who surrounded Turing, making new friends and lovers alongside world-leading science and technology in the smog-bound, bombed-out city of 1948. This talk will see the first public presentation of newly discovered letters from Turing, shedding new light on Turing's attitude to his prosecution.

Alan Turing's Altrincham is a history talk delivered by the renowned author Jonathan Swinton concentrating on Alan Turing's life in the local area.

Having lived in the same suburb as Turing when he moved to Manchester, Jonathan had become fascinated by Turing's lesser known work on the problem of flower growth, where Fibonacci numbers came from. In his talk, Jonathan will share his enthusiasm for the late mathematician and computer scientist.
