The feature debut of twin brothers Arab and Tarzan Nasser, Dégradé, unfolds entirely within a women’s hair salon in Gaza. As a confrontation between the police and a local gangster erupts outside its walls, the women inside find themselves trapped for thirteen hours. Blending caricature with realism, the film captures the layered complexity of life in Gaza, where political, social, and economic pressures overlap to shape everyday existence, and where women’s social spaces are increasingly constrained.
The film stars Hiam Abbass, the renowned Palestinian actress and filmmaker, internationally acclaimed for her powerful and nuanced performances.
Since Dégradé, the Nasser brothers’ work has received widespread international recognition. Gaza Mon Amour won the NETPAC Award at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival, while their most recent film, Once Upon a Time in Gaza, received the Best Director award in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes in 2025.
We revisit Dégradé a decade after its release, reflecting on the film in light of the ongoing realities in Gaza today.
The screening will be preceded by an introduction from Palestinian filmmaker Said Zagha and Palestinian artist Aser El Saqqa of Arts Canteen.
Presented by Films of Resistance, in collaboration with Aswatna Studio and Palestine House.
