Join curator duo brittle who will be activating Awaiting Home through a participatory counter-mapping exercise. Drawing from Jamaica Kincaid’s writing on gardens, inheritance and diasporic memory, the session invites participants to consider how we hold places in memory and imagination.

Curatorial Note: 

From one to another we move. We move internally to places of home within, we move externally to places of safety and belonging. We sit with the temporality and fleeting moments of flight in the air. Grasping for the familiar; within space. We hold on to kin. She (the earth) offers safety to nest, to root and build. Connection to earth is connection to the grains of soil our ancestors walked. The wind moves… always, across borders and seas, we move alongside the wind, with our feet planted deep to the core of the earth. 

She (the earth) is a witness. The ways land is turned into assets, boundaries, or battlegrounds. She witnesses the changes to temporalities. She resists, heals, and remembers.

Awaiting Home, brings together artists working with moving image, photography, digital and analog storytelling, opening portals that explore stories of people and the lands that hold them, revealing the complex relationships between landscapes and people. The artists weave together the intermediary between bodies and the ground they inhabit. 

Who has the right to stay? Who is pushed to move? What does it mean to own, to borrow, to inherit, or simply to care for this temporary place we call home?
