Lola is María Novaro’s directorial debut about an enchanting young mother and daughter looking for kindness and support in a rather impersonal city. Described by Diane Sippl as “Eighties New Wave” cinema that “traces the emotional sparks of female youth subculture in Mexico City that allow an unusual perspective on Mexican women today,” Navaro was among the first generation of female filmmakers to graduate from film school in Mexico.
With beautifully rendered shots by cinematographer Rodrigo García (Danzón, My Crazy Life, Four Rooms), Lola was written by María Novaro and her sister Beatriz and workshopped at the Sundance Institute’s lab for independent directors. The crumbling of civic infrastructures and the “contradictions of the Mexican economy” complicate this otherwise simple story of everyday life in Mexico City.
