In this online discussion, we will explore:

• The Clinical Ethicist: The vital, often behind-the-scenes role these professionals play in hospitals, and how they impact patient care and end-of-life decisions.

• Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD): As a fierce defender of medical autonomy, Eric will discuss the ethics of assisted dying in Canada. He has written extensively on why expanding MAiD access is both legally and morally justified, and why removing the "reasonably foreseeable death" requirement is a triumph for bodily autonomy.

• Advance Care Planning: Eric has boldly stated that "advance care planning is broken" in Canada. He will share his insights into why the current system fails patients and what he is building to fix it, so that our final wishes are actually honoured.

Meet Our Guest: Eric Mathison, PhD.

Eric Mathison is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of Toronto Scarborough, a clinical ethicist, and the author of the widely read bioethics newsletter, Value Judgments.

Eric brings a wealth of on-the-ground experience, having previously served as a Clinical Ethicist for Alberta Health Services, where he worked directly with doctors, patients, and families to resolve profound ethical dilemmas at the bedside.
