Processing Community Day Workshop: Small computers, local worlds

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll assemble mini portable computers from a computer board, screen, keyboard and power source, with parts that can be added, removed and rearranged.

Once they are up and running, you’ll experiment with different components and ways of using them. These might include environmental sensors, buttons and ways of communicating locally between computers.

Inspired by DIY cyberdecks, art and experimental electronics, the workshop is a chance to play with what small computers can do and explore how they might be adapted to place, communities, situations and needs.

No previous electronics or computing experience is required.

About Yadira Sánchez:
A technology worker whose practice spans electronics, off-grid computing, art and culture, with a focus on community-led technologies and infrastructures. Much of this work takes shape through tecnomilpa, an art and technology collective working alongside communities, co-making infrastructure, tools, artworks and shared learning to strengthen technological autonomy.
Yadira is a team member at the Slade Art+Tech Research Lab which focuses on computation, art and cultural practices through practice-based research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and public engagement. The Lab also contributes to the BA Art and Technology at UCL East, where students explore technology through artistic, critical and experimental practice.

This workshop is part of Processing Community Day, we are prioritising young people aged between 18 and 25 years old who are not in employment and education.
