Revolutionary Papers presents a book party on anticolonial magazines, Palestinian–Jewish co-resistance, and the histories of communist and anticolonial movements in Occupied Palestine. Hana Morgenstern will be joined by Manal Massalha, Howie Rechavia Taylor, Bayan Haddad and Clive Gabay, to discuss her new books on a forgotten world of anticolonial, Palestinian–Jewish culture. Following the colonisation of Palestine in 1948, Palestinian and Arab Jewish writers developed a socialist, anti-Zionist print culture through local Communist newspapers. Cultural Co-Resistance traces this movement’s history, its practices of resistance, and its relationships with the broader left.
The companion anthology, A People’s Literature, brings together the movement’s short stories, poems and essays in English translation, connecting local experiences to communist internationalism and global anticolonial struggles from Egypt to Algeria and Vietnam. Two panels will explore these histories and their afterlives. We will look at global movements for Jewish solidarity with Palestinians, while discussing the major barriers to local co-resistance under conditions of escalating apartheid and genocide in Palestine today.
All profits from ticket sales will go towards the Hanoon Foundation for medical aid in Palestine, as will a portion of the bar takings (the remaining bar takings will go towards the upkeep of Pelican House).
We will be joined by Dr Khaled Dawas- Consultant Surgeon, Hanoon Foundation, to say a few words about the important work the foundation does.
This is a Pelican House Social Club event. By registering to attend, you will automatically be signed up as a member (for free) of the Social Club. This means you can get drinks at the bar.
