Shadow - workshop
Shadow - workshop
A two-day workshop on torment, semenawa and the beauty that can emerge from shadows of suffering.
Finally at Peony Studio, Shadow is a two-day workshop dedicated to one of the central aspects of semenawa: torment.
Kinbaku does not necessarily create something that was not already there. It can reveal what we carry inside us.
Semenawa brings this idea into the relationship between rigger and model through endurance, intensity and vulnerability. It can place both people in front of difficult sensations and darker emotions, giving them space rather than trying to avoid them.
Shadow is an exploration of that space.
During the workshop we will investigate what torment actually means, why it is not simply another word for torture, and how it can influence the emotional and physical experience of a rope session.
We will work on the idea that the process can be more important than the final shape: how we arrive somewhere, what happens along the way, and how the same technical vocabulary can create completely different experiences depending on intention, mood and relationship.
We will also explore how semenawa — even when demanding, uncomfortable or tormenting — can create beauty.
Event Summary
Type: Advanced Kinbaku workshop — in person
Language: English
Duration: 2 days
Dates: 16–17 January 2027
Time: 10:00 – 17:30
Venue: Peony Studio, Turin, Italy
Teachers: Kurogami & Shiawase
This class will be limited to a small number of couples in order to allow close supervision throughout the exercises.
What we will work on
The central topic of the workshop will be torment and the different ways in which it can become part of a Kinbaku session.
Among the themes we will explore:
- Torment vs. Torture
- Suffering vs. Pain
- Physical stress and the boiling point
- Exposure
- Shame
- Oppression
- Objectification
- Surrendering and vulnerability
We will investigate different approaches according to the mood and intention of the session, looking at how technique, body, emotion and relationship can influence one another.
Rather than working towards predefined final shapes, the focus will be on what happens during the process: how tension develops, how intensity can be built and transformed, and how the rigger and model can remain present inside an evolving situation.
The workshop will also explore the aesthetics of semenawa and the ways in which discomfort, asymmetry, exposure, tension and vulnerability can become part of a powerful visual and emotional language.
Tops – prerequisites
This is an advanced class intended for people who are already familiar with semenawa, particularly those who are proficient in Kinbaku LuXuria Class #1.
Tops must:
- be able to tie a solid and reliable Gote in Kinbaku LuXuria style;
- be confident with suspension;
- be familiar with the different ways of stressing and developing a Gote;
- manage suspension lines confidently and efficiently;
- be comfortable with the fundamental vocabulary studied in Class #1, including Futomomo, leg harnesses and third ropes;
- be able to perform the basic technical elements without significant effort, allowing attention to move towards intention, process and interaction with the model.
Participants who have studied an equivalent module directly with Wildties or Soptik may also be admitted.
Equivalent experience may be evaluated by the organisers. The organisers and teachers will have the final decision regarding admission to the workshop, based on the technical requirements of the class and the safety of the participants.
Bottoms – prerequisites
Bottoms must:
- already be familiar with Kinbaku LuXuria style semenawa;
- be at ease with being tied in a gote;
- have solid previous experience with suspension;
- be familiar with demanding and progressive rope sessions;
- be able to communicate sensations, limits and needs clearly.
This workshop will involve both physical and emotional intensity. Participants should already have established communication within their tying partnership.
Throughout the workshop, safety, consent and mutual care remain the foundation of our practice.
Structure
The workshop spans two days, Saturday and Sunday, from 10:00 to 17:30.
The work will combine theoretical explanations, demonstrations and practical exercises for participating couples.
A lunch break will be scheduled during the day.
Changing facilities are available on-site, and participants are advised to arrive in advance in order to change, prepare their ropes and be ready before the beginning of the class.
I want to participate. What do I need to know?
Ropes
We recommend bringing a set of at least 12 ropes.
Jute ropes are recommended:
- 5–6 mm diameter;
- 7–8 metres long.
The rope set must be appropriate for suspension and semenawa practice.
Attire
Participants are encouraged to wear clothing they feel comfortable tying in.
Since several exercises will also focus on aesthetics, exposure and the visual quality of a session, bottoms are encouraged to bring clothing in which they feel comfortable and that can support the atmosphere they want to explore.
Nudity policy: genital exposure is not permitted.
Photo / Video
Photos of exercise demonstrations are allowed when authorised by the teachers, but video and audio recording are prohibited.
Photos of your own partner during exercises are permitted, provided that the privacy of the other participants is fully respected.
Partners cannot alternate during the workshop.
Educators and Style
The workshop will be taught by Kurogami and Shiawase.
A couple in life since 2014, they began their journey into Kinbaku after meeting Wildties and RedSabbath in 2016, when they started studying Kinbaku LuXuria Style.
Wildties' style directly descends from Naka Style, being Wildties Naka Akira's ichi-ban deshi.
Kinbaku LuXuria is rooted in this traditional lineage, preserving its principles while allowing each practitioner to develop their own personality, mood, aesthetics and flavour within the style.
Kurogami is a certified instructor of Kinbaku LuXuria Style, sharing the educational approach and values developed by Wildties and RedSabbath since 2018, when Kurogami and Shiawase started teaching and performing in Europe, Japan and United States.
In 2019, they had the honour of tying at the 25th Nawa Naka Kai in Tokyo, hosted by Naka Akira, opening the session for Wildties and Naka-san himself.
Their approach to teaching is based on the idea that technique is essential, but technique alone is not Kinbaku.
Structure, intention, presence, communication and relationship are what allow rope to become an experience.
Shadow develops precisely from this idea.
