Rope Handling Intensive Training

You know the harness. You know every single passage.
So why does it still take so much effort to tie?

During a recent N2 workshop, Wildties tied the two ropes of a harness in 58 seconds—while explaining, making jokes, and making sure everyone could see.

The class average for those same two ropes was 5 minutes.

The students knew every passage. The tying position was simply less comfortable than usual—and that was enough to expose the problem: rope handling.

We see this at every level. Our educational system allows students to learn shapes and principles quickly, but very few specifically train their rope handling at home. As the tying becomes more advanced, it becomes the thing that holds everything else back.

Your understanding progresses. Your hands need to progress with it.

On top of that, most exercises are done in ideal conditions, rather than real session conditions.

Think of tying the third rope of a gote with the model standing comfortably on their feet. Now imagine that same model on their tiptoes, in a high-tension Gote, maybe sweating or wearing layers of clothing. How much more difficult is that third rope to tie? How much is your technique hindered by the difficulty of handling the rope?

Or take your perfect Futomomo, which suddenly becomes a mess of uneven tensions as soon as the model is in an unconventional position.

And, last but not least: why does your Gote take 5 minutes when, at a slow pace, a pro can tie one in under two minutes?

Each extra minute spent retrieving rope, adjusting your grip, and correcting tensions take attention away from your model and interrupt what you are trying to communicate.

Rope handling is a key driver of efficiency, technical excellence, and emotional communication. Yet nowadays, it is seldom taught and practiced properly..

This two-day workshop is aimed at providing students with both the knowledge and the practical application of generic and specific rope handling skills.

We will explain the principles and drill them repeatedly, with continuous feedback and correction from the educators, as well as test your progress against benchmarks.

We will teach you exercises to do at home, but we will also repeat each movement until the correct movement pattern becomes embedded.

Be warned: this will be a bootcamp.

You will get tired, because we will drill and drill and drill.

But by the end, you will have measurable improvements.

This workshop is suitable for students who have taken at least an N1 class with us and know the basic harnesses. However, it will be very adaptable to different levels, and different benchmarks will be provided according to your level.

The style

The workshop follows the teaching approach of Riccardo Sergnese, Wildties, ichi-ban deshi of Naka Akira, and the technical principles developed within Kinbaku LuXuria.

Kinbaku LuXuria comes from the study of Naka Ryu and from a technical reworking designed to make the style suitable for European culture, bodies and safety needs.

It is an essential, intense and communicative style in which technical construction is inseparable from relationship, aesthetics, tension, presence and intention.
