Miners, trade unions and social conditions in South Africa since the fall of Apartheid: A talk by Sean Figg
Tue 9 Jul 2024 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM
The People's Bookshop, DH1 3NP
Description
The People's Bookshop in association with the North East Humanists and co-sponsored by the Ruth First Educational Trust (Durham University) and Durham Miners Association are delighted to host Sean Figg who will give a talk on Miners, trade unions and social conditions in South Africa since the fall of Apartheid.
Sean Figg moved to South Africa in 2013 shortly after the Marikana massacre (2012) in which 34 striking mineworkers were gunned-down by police. Working alongside veterans of the anti-apartheid struggle as well as their younger socialist colleagues -- community activists, trades unionists, and students -- who grew up under majority rule, Sean both witnessed and participated in the subsequent political upheavals and realignments within the workers' movement that still reverberate today.
Drawing on his personal experience of these struggles, Sean will show that the benefits of the end of Apartheid are yet to be fully realised by working class South Africans. Even in 2024, the year of South Africa's sixth democratic election since the apartheid system was ended, it continues to adversely affect the lives of South African working people.
Doors open at 6.30 and the talk begins at 7pm. Tickets are £5 which includes drinks and nibbles.
