People's Bookshop is delighted to welcome Dr Heather Laurence, a Northumbrian dialect playwright and author, reading from and discussing her new novel, Wor Hoose: The Waar Years (2026).

Written in authentic Northumbrian speech, Wor Hoose celebrates the language, humour and resilience of a Northeast family during the Second World War. preserving the cadence, character and local knowledge of voices that standard English often excludes.

By challenging the prejudice that treats non-standard language as inferior, Dr Laurence reframes Northumbrian as a living, sophisticated cultural resource and encourages greater recognition of the vital relationship between language, place, memory and community. Her writing strengthens regional identity and belonging.

We would be thrilled if you could join us.

Doors are at 6:30 and the evenings begins at 7:00pm. Tickets are £5 and include drinks and nibbles
