Memories of Others: Lunchtime Film Screening

Join us for a special screening of Memories of Others, a short documentary exploring the extraordinary work of Japanese photographer Akihiko Okamura in Ireland during the conflict and the artistic and emotional impact of its rediscovery.

Okamura travelled to Ireland in the late 1960s and early 1970s, creating a remarkable body of colour photography that recorded communities and everyday life during the early years of the conflict. Many of the photographs featured in the film were made in Belfast and remained largely unseen for decades.

The documentary reflects on Okamura’s distinctive approach and the importance of preserving, researching and revisiting photographic archives. It also considers how images can acquire new meanings as they move across generations, countries and historical contexts.

The film was created in collaboration with Photo Museum Ireland and the Akihiko Okamura Archive, Tokyo, and the Estate of Akihiko Okamura, Hakodate.
