New Beginners 35mm Black and White Camera & Film Photography workshop series presented by Award Winning photographer Artur Sikora at Photo Museum Ireland.

Over 3 consecutive Sundays improve your 35mm Black and White film photography with a different focus on each session: The Camera, The Negative and The Print.

October 11th

Week 1 - The Camera

In this workshop you will learn the best shooting tips for your analogue 35mm Camera and film. We will supply your first roll of film for this workshop.

What you will learn.

1. How to choose the best Black and White film for your future projects, covering ISO speeds, grain, contrast possibilities and an introduction to the broader range of film brands.
2. How to take light readings of a scene to achieve the best exposure, how and why you adjust shutter speed and aperture settings, and understanding depth of field.
3. Composition, how to translate what you see into what you capture. Improving your visual language and learning when to press the shutter.
4. How to plan your 36 frames for a great contact sheet.
5. You will end this session with an exposed roll of 35mm film which you will process and make a contact sheet with in Week 2.

October 18th

Week 2 - The Negative

In this workshop you will learn how to process your analogue 35mm exposed roll of film and produce negatives and a contact sheet.

What you will learn.

1. The do’s and don’ts of processing 35mm Black and White film, what chemicals to use, temperatures, timings and how to handle your film.
2. Once your negatives have been produced, learn how to make a contact sheet, a photographic page displaying small thumbnail previews of all the positive images from a single roll of 35mm film.
3. Contact sheet review, pick and circle your favourite images for enlargement in the following week's printing workshop.

October 25th

Week 3 - The Print

In this workshop you will learn how to print enlargements from your 35mm exposed roll of film and produce photographs.

What you will learn.

1. How to set up an enlarger for printing 35mm film.
2. Test Strips - How to choose the best aperture and time combination to expose your negative onto photographic paper.
3. How to read a test strip.
4. How to set up for producing your first test print.
5. Get an introduction to what filters do and burning/dodging printing techniques.
6. Produce your final print using all your new photography printing skills.

Tutor Bio:

Artur is a photographer with a background in architecture and urban design, holding a degree from the Krakow University of Technology (2000). He spent over a decade working as an architect before gradually shifting his creative focus to photography in 2007. While the medium has changed, his deep passion for architecture continues to inform his visual style and artistic approach. In 2011, Artur was named Black and White Photographer of the Year in the ‘Time’ single image category by Black+White Photography, a UK-based magazine. He was also nominated in several categories in the 2012, 2015, and 2017 editions of the same competition. His work has since been exhibited and published across Ireland, the UK, Germany, France, the United States, Canada, Hungary, and Poland, appearing in both photography and architectural publications, as well as in mainstream media. Artur’s portfolio includes a mix of personal and commercial projects, reflecting a strong architectural sensibility and a distinct visual narrative. Artists Website.

Photo Museum Ireland will provide all 35mm film, photographic paper, and course notes in pdf form.

On completion of all 3 sessions Photo Museum Ireland student members can request 6 free hours of darkroom time and a free negative scanning induction session with tutor Darragh Shanahan. Email for details.

Showcasing Creative Photography from our courses

To mark the creative success and share the enjoyment of the learning experience, a selection of photographic work from course participants will be displayed on Photo Museum Ireland's recently launched Flickr platform.

By taking part in our workshops you are invited to participate with one image from your workshop experience. We will email you after the workshop with an image request. You can view the album at any time to see recent participants’ work.

• Full refunds will be given for courses cancelled in excess of 10 working days before course start date.*
