Stop, Replay (Early Draft)
I aim to use the rich vocabulary of Bharatanatyam, together with poetry, dialogues, and music, to craft a piece adapted from Indian mythology. I am inspired by the challenge of placing ancient texts and age-old folktales in a modern context, much like Shakespeare in the Park finds contemporary parallels to classic works.
My goal is to bring forth a timeless story into the present, highlighting the enduring emotions and themes they evoke—those that continue to resonate deeply across generations.
Abhirami Rao is an American-Indian multidisciplinary performer based in NJ/NYC. Since 2015, her work actively blends movement, voice, and storytelling. With a background that spans journalism, acting, singing, and Indian classical dance, Abhirami’s training has been both intensive and deeply rooted in tradition. She trained in Bharatanatyam with A. Lakshmanaswamy for a solid 19 years, and along the way picked up skills in yoga, Carnatic music, improv, theatre, and even a dash of clowning! She’s enjoyed performing at international festivals and some of India’s most respected venues. When she’s not creatively engaged, Abhirami enjoys drinking ginger chai, people-watching, and catching new plays/musicals, while somehow still getting lost in the NYC subway.
