About the Wood

Pigwiggen Wood is our family rewilding project in the north-east corner of the Dartmoor National Park, a fifteen minute walk from Chagford. It’s normally closed to the public because of the need to preserve its quiet magic and protect its delicate biodiversity, but we love to open it up on special days and share it with others.

About the Open Days

Woodland Open Days offer a chance to escape from the pressures of life and connect with nature and each other. Bring a picnic. Enjoy our yummy homemade cakes and tea. Toast marshmallows over the fire. Ditch your to-do lists and simply read, paint, or rest awhile in the dancing shadows of the leaves. There’s a distinctive atmosphere here: it’s easy to understand why earlier generations spoke of a ‘presence’ in the woods.

The Great Oak Table

Pigwiggen Wood is the home of the Great Oak Table - the longest table in the world crafted from a single English oak tree. This venerable 500-year-old storm-felled tree was discovered after a year-long search, and the creation of the table was crowdfunded by over two hundred supporters. Our hope is that, even for those who may never visit in person, the Great Oak Table will serve as a potent symbol of a kinder world.

Practical Info

Your visit can be any time between 1.00pm and 5.00pm. Everyone is welcome to a place at the Great Oak Table, no matter their financial situation, so the open days are free to attend with an entirely optional donation towards the cost of refreshments. We ask our visitors to reserve a space so as to manage numbers, and - most importantly - bake enough cakes! There’s no car parking, but there is room to park bicycles, prams, buggies, and mobility scooters. We’ll send directions, further information, and any event updates a couple of days in advance. The walk from Chagford is a delight, a gentle stroll along a quiet Devon lane, which many visitors say feels like a pilgrimage in itself - a purposeful journey to a special place. :)

See you in the woods!
