"The Algorithmic Divide: How the Internet is pulling men and women further apart"
with Ellie Softley

From dating apps to TikTok feeds, algorithms are quietly shaping how we see ourselves - and each other. This talk explores the growing algorithmic divide between men and women, and how online spaces are intensifying gendered worldviews in very different ways.

We’ll examine why many young men are drawn to right-wing politics, often through the manosphere's business model: one that promises belonging and offers simple answers to loneliness and isolation. For some, this content fills a real emotional gap - but it can also funnel frustration into radicalisation and extremist misogyny.

At the same time, many women are being pulled leftward. Shaped by constant exposure to online misogyny and culture-war narratives about women's choices. We’ll unpack viral flashpoints, from the rise of OnlyFans content creators to the “trad wife” aesthetic, offering an insight into how algorithms are dividing men and women.

We will highlight the gendered content ecosystems that have become normalised and what this means for our relationships, political ideologies and trust. Over a pint, we’ll ask: how did we get here - and how do we help men and women to connect again?
