Protein, power and profit: the rise of the ultra-processed food industry

With Dr Leila Fathi

Are protein bars and protein ice-cream all that they're cut out to be? Historically, we have gone through waves of the food industry focusing on specific nutrients and aggressively marketing products to people. For a while it was low-fat, then it was low-sugar, with many more iterations from then we are now at a point in time where the focus is on having a high protein diet and products packed with protein.

The problem with aggressive marketing from the food industry is that it is changing population diet, but not necessarily for the better. We know that poor diet is exacerbated by the prevalence of ultra-processed foods in our food system, which currently contributes 66% of total energy intake to the average UK diet. We are facing an obesity and chronic disease crisis but how often have we heard that individuals are to blame for their dietary choices and habits?

This talk will explore how we are deeply connected to our food environment and are influenced by the food industry to change what and how we eat. Dr Leila Fathi will talk through the tactics that food industry uses, their corporate power, and what we can do as consumers to make more conscious decisions that are better for our health and wellbeing.
