"How To Rethink Support For Authoritarian Leaders: Why People Who Voted For Trump Are Not Deplorables"
With Melissa Butcher
Summary
In 2024, almost 77 million people in the USA voted for Donald Trump. As with his election in 2016 (and the Brexit vote in the UK), there has been a barrage of commentary describing these people as being ‘uneducated’, ignorant, voting against their own interests, ‘deplorables’.
In a country that positions freedom at the heart of its identity, it may seem an odd choice to elect a leader who openly spoke of restricting freedoms, but as Melissa Butcher explores in this talk, there are a range of reasons people voted for Trump often related to feeling unsafe in a rapidly changing world. Understanding this trade off between freedom and safety becomes crucial if we are to reverse the rise of authoritarian leaders.
