"Why Didn't I Think Of This Before: The Idiot Brain, Ten Years On"
With Dean Barnett

Summary
In 2016, neuroscientist Dr Dean Burnett published his international bestselling debut book, The Idiot Brain, all about the things our brains do wrong, and what people get wrong about it.

Looking back 10 years on, he’d like to report that societies understanding of the brain has only improved, and brain-based misunderstandings are a thing of the past.

He’d like to say that, but he can’t. Because that’s absolutely not true.

After a decade on the frontline of neuroscience communication and media, Dr Burnett has seen the rise of many brand-new examples of neurological nonsense, that have quickly become widespread, and distorted our understanding of our most complex organ. Is the rise in neurodiversity really a modern phenomenon? Is dopamine really ‘addictive’? Can you really boost your IQ with an app, or supplement? Will we all end up with a chip in our head that gives us superpowers? Can AI really cause ‘brain rot’, or read our minds?

In honour of the publication of the 10-year anniversary edition of The Idiot Brain, Dean will be providing science-based answers to all these and more, and any other you may have, at Pints of Knowledge.

Bio
My first book, The Idiot Brain, became an international bestseller, translated into more than thirty languages and read around the world. It continues to be used in schools, universities, mental health settings, and in other places I still can’t quite believe. It has been spotted amidst the elite of Bollywood, it has been used to mock injured celebrities, it made waves in the US TV industry, it has been discussed for live audiences of millions.

According to various testimonies, there are now numerous doctors, scientists, and therapists in the world who chose their career path after being inspired by The Idiot Brain. Multiple psychologists and psychotherapists continue to use it as a resource and guide for patients and their families.

Despite all this, I remain based in South Wales, where I’m now focusing on reconnecting my work with the place that shaped me.

Right now, I’m celebrating ten years of The Idiot Brain and working on my next major book, coming in 2027.
