"A Brief History of Getting Into Your Head"
With Oscar MacCormac

Summary
Neurosurgery is commonly thought to be one of the most technically advanced surgical specialties in terms of the equipment available to neurosurgeons to make surgery as safe as possible for our patients.

However, did you know that one of (if not the oldest) the oldest known surgical techniques is, in fact, neurosurgical, dating back to Ancient Egypt?!

Allow me to take you on a whistle stop journey through the origins of neurosurgical practice, to modern day technology. Each landmark breakthrough will be looked at, as well as a brief history around their introductions and the impact it had on brain and spinal surgery globally.

As well as this, I will outline some of the most exciting new techniques/therapies that are on the neurosurgical horizon, including some from my own research.

Bio

Oscar MacCormac is a neurosurgery resident at King's College Hospital, London; one of the busiest neurosurgical units in Europe. Alongside his neurosurgical training, he is in the final stages of submitting his PhD thesis on intra-operative imaging techniques to visualise and delineate brain tumours clearly, as well as providing real-time visual information on brain oxygenation during surgery.
