"Can You Fold DNA Like Paper? The Science and History of DNA Origami"
with Ilaria Sandei
Summary:
We are all familiar with the art of origami: transforming a simple sheet of paper into intricate cranes, frogs, boats, and countless other shapes. But what if we could do the same with DNA? What does M. C. Escher’s artwork Depth have to do with molecular engineering? And how did an epiphany in a university pub help inspire an entirely new field of science?
In this talk, we will explore one of the most fascinating frontiers of modern science: how scientists design and fold DNA into complex shapes, and how these tiny structures are being used in cutting-edge research today. We will trace the story from its conceptual origins at the University at Albany in the early 1980s to breakthroughs such as the world’s tiniest Mona Lisa and nanoscale robots.
Part history, part nanotechnology, and part scientific detective story, this talk reveals how a molecule best known for carrying genetic information has become one of the most versatile building materials in modern science.
Bio
Dr. Ilaria Sandei is a Researcher at Imperial College London specializing in DNA-based data storage and nanotechnology. She previously worked as a DNA origami scientist in Silicon Valley after completing her PhD in Chemistry at the University of Leeds. She has over seven years of experience in DNA nanotechnology, combining molecular design with synthetic biology and advanced characterization techniques. She has authored scientific publications and patent applications, presented her research at international conferences, and is also a published fiction writer in Italian.

FAQs:
What is Pints of Knowledge?
Pints of Knowledge is a series of public talks where experts, researchers, and big thinkers share fascinating ideas all in the relaxed setting of a pub. We bring brilliant minds and curious audiences together over a pint, covering topics from science and politics to history, art, and beyond.
What happens at Pints of Knowledge?
At each Pints of Knowledge event, you’ll hear engaging talks (approx. 40 minutes) from expert speakers on fascinating topics — followed by an audience Q&A (approx. 20 minutes). The vibe is informal and social, set in a pub where you can grab a drink, meet interesting people, and enjoy big ideas in a relaxed setting.
What if I don't drink alcohol?
No problem at all! Pints of Knowledge is all about the ideas and the community, not the drinks. You’re welcome to enjoy a soft drink, coffee, or whatever you prefer. The focus is on creating a relaxed, social atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable.
