"Demystifying AI"
With Dr Ruth Stalker-Firth

Summary
In the news, we are constantly reading about how AI is evolving beyond our control to take over the world. Personally, I’d happily welcome robots into my home, if only they could take care of the shopping, housework, and cooking!

In this talk, we will trace the recurring rise and fall - and excitement and fear - of AI with its spooky stories of the ghost in the machine. From robots in Ancient Greece to present-day generative AI such as ChatGPT, we look at how and why AI has developed over time, and exactly what it can and cannot do.

Bio
Dr Ruth Stalker-Firth’s journey into AI began in 1993, initially as a way to spend a summer in Paris. Instead, it led her to the Alps, where she represented Switzerland in technical innovation. Since 2001, she has worked as a university lecturer and human-centred AI consultant. Ruth firmly believes that technology is a mirror of society, and that understanding how our computers work is key to feeling more confident—and happier—in an increasingly digital world.

Ruth is an engaging public speaker and a popular tutor on VIA. She was featured in WI Life Magazine in February 2026 and recognised on National Women in Science and Engineering Day 2025 for her work highlighting that modern technology simply would not exist without the contributions of women, who were the original computers. Her website and blog attract over 1.2 million visits each year.
