"Jade Goody and the Chris Hoy Effect: What is Screening and Does It Work?"
With Dr Shohaib Ali

Summary
When Jade Goody died from cervical cancer in 2009, cervical screening uptake rose by 70%. When Sir Chris Hoy announced his stage 4 prostate cancer diagnosis in 2023, visits to the NHS prostate cancer screening page increased by 672%

However, what is screening? Why don't we screen for every condition? Why do people still develop cancer despite attending every screening appointment?

In this talk, we'll explore what screening actually is, how it works, and why it isn't the silver bullet it may seem on first glance. By the end, you'll understand why screening is one of medicine's most powerful yet most misunderstood interventions, and why that matters for all of us.
