Everything You Wanted to Know About the British Empire (But Were Too Afraid to Ask)
with Shalina Patel
Summary
Think back to your school history lessons. Chances are they were dominated by Henry VIII, the odd date like 1066, and not a great deal else. And for something that shaped so much of the modern world, and so much of the history you did learn, the British Empire was strangely absent from most of our classrooms.
The result is a set of significant "historical blind spots", an entire chapter of our shared past that many of us never really got taught, and can feel unsure how to talk about now.
Award-winning teacher and historian Shalina Patel is here to fill in the gaps. Drawing on examples from her book The History Lessons, she'll usher you back into the classroom to explore the people, places and stories behind the British Empire, what really happened, why so much of it was left out of our education, and why these stories matter today.
Expect an engaging, myth-busting and refreshingly honest session, no prior knowledge needed, and no question too afraid to ask.
