"How to Reconnect to Your Body, Sexuality and Desire"

Summary
When most people think about prison, they think about crime, punishment and the headlines that dominate the news. Yet prisons are also places where people live, age and, ideally, prepare to return to society. Today, however, the prison system faces significant challenges, including overcrowding, rising numbers of older prisoners, increasing health needs and growing pressure on staff and services.
Drawing on my experiences working and conducting research in prisons, this talk explores the realities of life behind bars and asks whether we need a different conversation about prison. From my first experiences walking through the prison gates to the challenges facing the prison system today, I will reflect on what prison feels like and how it is portrayed in public debate.
The talk will also explore the role that sport and physical activity can play in supporting health and wellbeing in prison, particularly in environments facing overcrowding and increasing demand. Finally, I will discuss one of the fastest-growing yet least discussed prison populations: older people in prison. As more people spend longer behind bars, prisons are increasingly becoming places where people age, raising important questions about health, dignity and the future of the prison system.
Combining personal reflections and stories from prison life, this talk invites us to think differently about prisons and the people who live within them.
