Public History: How Do Pubs Communicate the Past?
By Historic Pub Tour Guide and Public Historian Charo Haverman
Pubs are more than places to drink, they’re cultural landmarks, neighbourhood memory banks, and living storytellers. They're woven in to the DNA of the United Kingdom. But whose stories are they telling? And what gets left out?
In this fascinating talk, public historian and historic pub tour guide Charo Havermans explores how pubs act as informal museums, shaping how we see local history through their architecture, decor, names, and myths. Drawing on her research and fieldwork, including a documentary and oral history interviews with East London landladies, Charo will unpack how pubs reflect our past, distort it, and sometimes completely rewrite it.
Charo holds an undergraduate degree in History and Spanish from University of Cambridge as well as a Masters in Public History from UCL.
Expect stories, surprises, and a deeper look at the buildings we pass and drink in every day.
